The Everlasting Mirror

The Everlasting Mirror incorporates handwoven palmetto roses, a craft commonly made and sold by local artisans in Charleston. In local folklore, the palmetto rose is associated with enduring love and is said to have been exchanged between partners during periods of separation, dating back to the Civil War.

For this work, each Palmetto Rose is woven from fresh palmetto leaves and precisely arranged within the wooden frame. The roses are then left to dry, preserving their structure and fixing them in a permanent state, framing the viewer in an enduring ring of blossoms.
