Artists, residents, architects, planners, preservationists, educators, students, arts workers, public officials, and anyone with an interest in Charleston’s public realm are encouraged to participate.

Use the comments to share ideas, experiences, questions, examples from other cities, concerns about current processes, and proposals for how Charleston might approach public art differently. Comments can be submitted anonymously—you do not need to publicly identify yourself in order to contribute.

The goal is to build a useful public record of perspectives on commissioning, funding, preservation, planning, artist selection, development, maintenance, and the role art should play in Charleston’s shared spaces. Thoughtful disagreement is welcome. The more people participate, the more useful this can become as a resource for artists, residents, cultural organizations, journalists, policymakers, and others involved in decisions about the city.

If you have something to add, add it. Don’t assume someone else will say it. Keep the discussion focused on ideas, policies, processes, projects, and institutions rather than personal attacks. Firsthand experiences and specific examples are especially useful.
