Moja Poster and reliefs

Moja Arts Festival is an annual celebration of African-American and Caribbean art and culture in Charleston, South Carolina—rooted in community, heritage, and creative expression.

For the 2016 poster, Williams built a series of sculptural reliefs using bold geometric shapes, layered color, and patterned surfaces. The pieces incorporate materials connected to Charleston’s African American traditions—like sweetgrass and palmetto roses—bringing a tactile, local language into the work.

Vessel No. 1 was chosen as the anchoring artwork for the poster design. Williams then photographed the sculpture and added an assortment of shapes and typography to reflect the festival's layered histories and vibrant energy.
