250 Years from Mr. Freedman is a solo exhibition by Fletcher Williams III presented at the historic Storehouse 8 building at the Charleston Navy Yard during the 250th anniversary of the United States. The exhibition features a series of tin-roof relief sculptures constructed from salvaged material recovered from a burned Freedom Cottage in Charleston.
The works introduce Mr. Freedman, a figure whose life spans centuries and whose accounts move between Charleston and the American South. Through relief sculpture and accompanying text, Williams reflects on the evolving meanings of freedom across generations. Drawing from Revolutionary-era history, Black Loyalist narratives, Lowcountry folklore, and vernacular architecture the exhibition presents each artwork as an entry within Mr. Freedman’s life and legacy.
Birds, stars, fences, an architectural remnants recur throughout the exhibition as symbols of allegiance, pride, and faith. 250 Years from Mr. Freedman considers Charleston’s central role within the American story while approaching history as something lived, remembered, inherited, and continually retold.
