BRICK

In this ongoing series of works on paper, Williams uses brick as both a physical source for rubbings and a repeating modular form, extending a process also used in Picket Variations. A basic unit of construction, the brick carries associations with shelter, labor, enclosure, permanence, and place. Through repetition, shifts in color, and changes in density and arrangement, the familiar form moves between object, pattern, field, and structure. Williams returns to the brick as a way of testing how ordinary built forms accumulate meaning through use, history, and context—and how their visual and symbolic power persists as those contexts change.
