American associations
In this ongoing series of works on paper, Williams begins with a plate engraved repeatedly with the phrase WHITE PICKET FENCE AMERICAN DREAM. Through selective pressure, repetition, and shifts in color, fragments of the phrase surface, disappear, and recombine into new words and associations. Familiar language moves between statement and pattern, carrying its inherited associations with aspiration, domesticity, race, belonging, and exclusion without settling into a fixed reading. Williams returns to these phrases not to resolve their contradictions, but to test how much their meaning—and their persuasive power—can shift through small acts of repetition and alteration.
